UnitingCare and Congregation Outreach Activities

  • Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) is very keen to recruit people with disabilities into their workforce to provide opportunity for people to learn and grow as individuals and to continue to make GSI stronger and contribute as an agency of the Uniting Church in our community. Information sessions and tours are being held on Friday 27 March, 24 April and 22 May from 9.30am at 47 Magnet Road Canning Vale. To book please phone (08) 9463 0500.
  • A golf day held at Whaleback Golf Course last week raised nearly $13000 for Good Samaritan Industries. GSI Received a cheque from the City of Canning Mayor Hon Joe Della Donne. GSI is very grateful for the community support. The money will go to the Ralph Sutton Education Fund which provides training opportunities for GSI’s clients and is a most worthy cause.
  • Cannington School Truancy pilot on hold. UnitingCare West is pleased with the recent decision by the WA State Government not to support the school truancy trial in Cannington as proposed by the Federal Government. The trial was due to have commenced in the Cannington region on 1 January 2009 and would have resulted in the suspension or cancellation of Centrelink payments to families whose children were truant and not attending school. This would have had a devastating impact upon many families and children living in the region, and would have placed these families in further poverty and disadvantage.
UnitingCare West and other not for profit agencies have consistently maintained that this proposed trial was too punitive and too radical in nature, and failed to recognise that the causes of school truancy are very complex and multi-dimensional. It has been a successful outcome and UnitingCare West is also advocating that the WA Government reconsider the implementation of involuntary income management trials in WA as a means of attempting to deal with complex child protection issues. For more information please contact Melissa.delborrello@unitingcarewest.org.au.
