For the week commencing Sunday 27 December: Mid West: Geraldton Lighthouse Christian Fellowship and Northampton congregations. Please also pray for the National Working Group on Docrtrine and Theology & Discipleship.

Many of you will be aware of the recent incident involving the West Australian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong and how critically ill Evan Williams, Rev Rick and Ruth Williams’ son, has been. We are pleased to let people know he is out of intensive care and improving each day.

We are saddened at the death of Daniel Hall, former Scotch student, and express our deep sorrow to his family. We also express our concern for the rest of the youth orchestra, one of whom is Ben Clapton, the son of Rev John and Rev Eira Clapton.

Please keep all of these young people, staff and their families and friends in your prayers.

General Council (December 2009)

December General Council began with devotions led by the Moderator, Rev Ken Williams, who emphasised just how far the services of the Uniting Church go. Through its congregations, schools and agencies the Uniting Church touches the lives of WA people ranging from the homeless to the CEO of the state’s largest employer.

Particular pastoral concerns were expressed for Melville Uniting Church following the fire and for the Korean congregation who found the church on fire.

Regular Reports Received

In line with its regular reporting schedule, General Council received a report from the Ministerial Benefits Committee, Nominating Committee, Assembly Standing Committee, Church Law Committee, Pastoral Relations and Placements Commission, Congregational Community Services Commission and the Ministerial Education Board.

Resources Review

During 2009 Bob Seinor has undertaken a review of all our finances and prepared an in-depth report which has examined the change in our financial parameters from 1977 to 2009. Bob has prepared a financial overview examining the governance and management and a broad range of issues for the Uniting Church to address in 2010. The report includes some possible, positive and practical ways the Church can address these issues and build enduring financial stability for the future. General Council members have the report to consider over the next two months before further discussion at the next meeting.

Commission for Education for Discipleship and Leadership

Following on from the Synod 2009 decision to establish a Commission for Education for Discipleship and Leadership, General Council has undertaken the task of electing the new members to the commission. Once those concerned have been notified, General Council will be able to publish the names of the members.

Rural Ministry Team Co-ordinator

General Council made a decision regarding the appointment of the Rural Ministry Team Co-ordinator. The decision will be announced as soon as possible following notification of key people concerned.

Multicultural Ministry

The General Council agreed to the establishment of a pilot project for multicultural and cross-cultural ministry, and a half-time placement of a new leadership position in multicultural ministry with the Presbytery for a three-year period.  General Council expressed appreciation for a $50,000 grant from Good Samaritan Industries to help with this new initiative.

Changes to Regional Boundaries

Further to the proposal that went to the September Presbytery meeting that changes be made to the Metro North, Metro West and Metro Central regional boundaries, General Council noted the agreement of congregations that:

  • Maylands/Mount Lawley congregation becomes part of the Metro North region, and
  • Scarborough/Waterman and Innaloo congregations become part of the Metro West region.
Staff Movements

Laurie Rawlings has commenced as Resources Administrator.

UnitingWorld is giving continued expression to this call through the launch of the Song of Solidarity Appeal. For more information visit www.unitingworld.com.au.
