Congregations

Members of the Melville Congregation wish to extend sincere thanks to the entire Uniting Church community for their prayers and support following the recent arson attack on their church building.  At this distressing time our grief has been considerably lessened by the concern of so many people and we have felt greatly strengthened by the generosity of those who have offered to help in a variety of practical and financial ways.  These expressions of kindness and thoughtfulness have caused the congregation to experience a sense of real hope at a very sad time.

It is also important to mention that the significant ecumenical support offered to the congregation has been overwhelmingly generous.  We wish to thank all who have responded in such significant and caring ways.

Toodyay in Recovery

Members of the Toodyay Uniting Church are thankful no lives were lost in December’s fires. Left-right: Sheena Hesse, Shirley Patten, Millie Heath, Judith Walton and Max Heath. When Toodyay was hit by a massive bushfire on Monday 29 December, 2009, there were stories of serious destruction. Fire-fighters worked hard that night, and in a show of community spirit, volunteers rallied together from many surrounding towns such as York, Wongan Hills and as far as Rockingham, to help put out the blaze. Reports suggest up to 3,000 hectares of land was burnt, and 37 houses were destroyed. Thankfully, no lives were lost, although some people have been injured.

Max Heath, Toodyay fire fighter and Uniting Church member, in was in charge of operational control of extinguishing the fire — until Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) took over — and worked tirelessly at controlling it.

“It’s the biggest fire we’ve had in Toodyay in terms of loss of property,” he said. “How we never lost lives I just don’t know. The water bombers and fire fighters have all done such a good job.”
