World Refugee Day – Uniting Church calls for more compassion in Australia’s asylum seeker policies

On World Refugee Day, the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Western Australia believes the time for a change in asylum seeker policy is well overdue.

The Acting Moderator, Rev Ken Williams said, “We are continuing to witness the decline of mental health among asylum seekers languishing in substandard offshore detention facilities that breach our international human rights obligations. For people who came to us with hope for a life free of persecution, we are persistently and cruelly extinguishing what hope still remains through the current policy of mandatory and often indefinite detention.

“We must always remember that asylum seekers are human like us. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents and grandchildren. We find it deeply concerning that over 1000 children remain in detention and yet both major parties remain unmoved in their position on asylum seekers.
