This is a volunteer position. No remuneration is provided.

Research Support and Development Unit, Fiona Stanley Hospital Eligibility

Current WA Health staff, volunteers and external individuals are eligible to be considered for these positions.

    Position Description

The South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) provides ethical advice to hospitals and researchers about proposed research projects. The HREC aims to protect the rights and interests of those participating in research by assessing the research proposal and discussing any associated ethical issues such as exposure to risk, the information provided to participants or how participants will consent.

As a member of the SMHS HREC you can help to support high quality and ethically sound research. The role involves critically reviewing research proposals and assessing their integrity, justice, beneficence and respect, in accordance with the National Health & Medical Research Council’s National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. Members of the SMHS HREC are provided ongoing training to support their understanding of ethical issues in medical research.

The positions are voluntary, and involve approximately 10-12 hours of work per month in meeting preparation and meeting attendance, or responding to out of session reviews. Please note that all meeting papers are circulated electronically. Depending on availability of this category, you may only be required to attend a meeting once every 2-3 months.
