Moderator Elect – Susy Thomas
At the 43rd Uniting Church WA Synod meeting held on 13-15 September 2019, Susy Thomas was named the Moderator Elect of the Uniting Church, Synod of WA. Susy will shadow Rev Steve Francis for a year before taking over full responsibilities as Moderator.
Susy and and her husband Phillip have been members of the Uniting Church in South Perth for a long time. Born in Kerala, India, to Christian parents she had a happy childhood steeped in faith. Sunday school, Church, youth groups played an important part of her life and shaped her core values. Susy strongly believes in universal equality and justice, underpinned by a bedrock of mercy.
Forty-eight years ago, after completing her studies (B.A. Economics) in India, she met Phillip Thomas whom she married and began life in London together. They lived in England for 12 years until 1982 when they migrated to Perth with their two young daughters, Sonia and Sarah.
Among the many positions that Susy held in Australia, she counted being CEO of Drug Arm WA (now called Hope Community) from 1985 to 2011 as one of her more rewarding engagements. The entity is a community service organisation, which provided support to people who are most disadvantaged and marginalised in our society. More recently in 2018, she was appointed chair of Uniting World WA – International Partnership and Development Commission, an organisation that is involved in international community service programmes.
