Summer Spirit 2027 – Not Hiding, Not Shouting
Being public Christians in a divided world.
The Uniting Centre for Education and Formation along with the Summer Spirit organising committee invite you to Not Hiding, Not Shouting on Saturday 6 March 2027, at All Saints Floreat Uniting Church, with guest speaker Rev Robyn Whitaker.
You know the moment. A conversation turns to faith, politics or the latest headline, and you’re not sure whether to speak up or stay quiet.
Public debate is more polarised than ever, technology is reshaping how we live and connect, and many of us are asking what it looks like to be a Jesus-follower in public today.
Summer Spirit 2027 is a day to explore a better way: faith that’s neither tucked away nor turned up to full volume.
Our guide for the day is Robyn Whitaker, biblical scholar and Director of The Wesley Centre for Theology, Ethics and Public Policy, Victoria.
We’ll ask:
- What’s really changing in Australia and beyond?
- How do we respond with hope rather than fear?
- How do we talk about faith in ways people can actually hear?
- How do we engage hard issues without digging in on one side?
For ministers, lay preachers, lay pastors, ministry practitioners and church leaders, and for anyone who wants to think more deeply about faith and public life.
The Day
Reading the Signs of the Times
Drawing on current events, media and everyday life, Robyn will help us make sense of the cultural, religious and technological shifts reshaping our communities, and what they mean for the church.
Not Hiding, Not Shouting
Through workshops, conversation and practical activities, we’ll practise the skills of public faith: listening well, speaking with courage and respect, moving beyond polarised responses, and connecting faith with everyday life and ministry.
Meet Robyn Whitaker
Rev Associate Professor Robyn Whitaker is a Uniting Church minister, biblical scholar and writer from Melbourne. She teaches New Testament at Pilgrim Theological College and directs The Wesley Centre for Theology, Ethics and Public Policy. Robyn is passionate about helping Christians connect faith with the challenges of contemporary life.
