Synod Standing Committee – Expression of Interest

The Uniting Church in Western Australia is seeking expressions of interest from people who are passionate about the future of the Church and willing to contribute their gifts to Synod leadership and governance through membership of the Synod Standing Committee (SSC).

  • Uniting Church in WA is a major Christian denomination in Western Australia
  • Only open to Uniting Church members, and members of Synod (WA)

About the Role

The Uniting Church in Western Australia is seeking expressions of interest from people who are passionate about the future of the Church and willing to contribute their gifts to Synod leadership and governance through membership of the Synod Standing Committee (SSC). The SSC is appointed by the Synod and exercises the responsibilities of the Synod between meetings of the Synod, as set out in the Constitution, Regulations and By-Laws of the Uniting Church.

The SSC brings together representatives from across the life of the Church, including the Moderator, General Secretary, Presbytery, Congress, Agencies and Schools, together with elected members of the Synod. It meets at least six times a year, along with three Joint Standing Committees with the Presbytery of WA.

Both ordained and non-ordained (lay) people can be considered.

We are seeking people who can contribute one or more of the following:

  • Strategic thinking and future-focused leadership
  • Governance and board experience
  • Financial management and organisational stewardship
  • Risk management and compliance expertise
  • Property, legal or business experience
  • Human resources, organisational development or change management skills
  • Knowledge of the mission and ministry of the Church
  • Strong communication, collaboration and discernment skills
  • Experience serving on councils, boards, committees or governing bodies

Responsibilities

Members of the Synod Standing Committee help provide leadership and oversight across a broad range of matters affecting the Church, including:

  • Governance and strategic direction
  • Financial sustainability and budget oversight
  • Mission priorities and ministry initiatives
  • Risk, compliance and policy matters
  • Establishment and oversight of working groups and advisory bodies
  • Supporting the Church’s response to significant opportunities and challenges between meetings of Synod

We are also open to including and mentoring professionals with limited governance experience.

We encourage expressions of interest from people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and skills.

Being a confirmed member of the Uniting Church is required, along with being a member of Synod (co-options to Synod may be possible).

This is an opportunity to contribute to the governance, mission and future direction of the Uniting Church in Western Australia and to help ensure that the Church remains faithful, effective and sustainable in its ministry and witness.

Enquires can be made to the General Secretary David Beards [email protected] or 08 9260 9800
