Walking for a Cause – Trek 4 Timor 2024
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in May 38 people set out on an 8km walk around the river, over the Mount Henry and Canning Bridges, to raise money for our partner foundation in East Timor, Lafaek Diak.
Trek for Timor is an annual fundraising event organised by the International Partnerships and Development Commission (IPDC). Treks are the Commission’s regular way of raising funds to support the Mobile Health Clinic run by our Uniting Church partners in East Timor, Fundaçoun Lafaek Diak (FLD – the Good Crocodile Foundation). The mobile clinic goes out to a remote community twice a week from its base in Triloca (out of Baucau). The roads are rough tracks in many places and very hard on the vehicle. Our efforts support the work of the health clinic including the driver’s salary and maintenance on the vehicle.
As people gathered at Mount Pleasant Uniting Church to begin the walk, Alison Dyall, a member of the IPDC who has an ongoing connection with Lafaek Diak, gave a presentation on the work of the mobile health clinic, and the current health challenges in Timor Leste.
Through registration fees and generous donations the event has raised close to $5000 which will help maintain the ongoing support of the project.
Thanks once again to the generous hospitality of the volunteers at St Martin’s Foothills Uniting Church for providing afternoon refreshments for the returning walkers and to the Mount Pleasant Uniting Church for the use of the church facilities before and after the event. Thanks also to Alison Dyall for her presentation about the project, and to all who participated or volunteered their time on the day!
