The Social Justice Commission has a tradition of resourcing the church for Sustainable September by preparing worship material for all Uniting Churches in the WA Synod.
In 2023 the Commission made the decision to move towards the Season of Creation model rather than Sustainable September. Season of Creation is widely used across the ecumenical denominations. The resource they have produced this year is for ‘Sustainable Sunday’ to be used on Sunday 24 September with resources reflecting on the Lectionary readings for the day.
This year we are pleased to offer congregations a liturgy outline including a sermon reflection, along with congregation activities and a resource on sustainability.
Preparing for Sustainable Sunday
The congregation may want to include some interactive activity following the reflection.
- You could play the ‘Sustainability Game’ bingo and follow this with a short discussion around the challenges and effectiveness of individual household actions. (see sheet attached)
- In the weeks leading up to the service people could collect recycling items (or do a litter pick-up of such items in your town or suburb) and then gather these to produce a recycled art project. (see sheet attached)
- An energy and waste audit of your church could be carried out before the service. (see ‘Simplifying Sustainability’ attached) Present this to the church and then small groups could share about ways to be more energy and waste efficient.
